Use Base 10 blocks, Base 10 discs, and value-labeled equations to show how many tens and ones there are to start, how many are taken away, and how many are left. What's 50-20? 50 is 5 tens and 0 ones. 20 is 2 tens and 0 ones. There are no ones, so just subtract the tens. Since 5 tens - 2 tens = 3 tens, 50-20 = 30.
